Mindreading, Privileged Access and Understanding Narratives

چکیده
In this paper we first offer a task analysis of the false belief test including the bidirectional relationship between mindreading and language. Following this we present our theory concerning Quinian bootstrapping of the meaning of mental state terms and relate it to the task-analytic framework. Finally we present an experiment on ascribing privileged access through minimal narratives which is intended to serve as a test of our theory. 1998 ACM Subject Classification J.4 Social and Behavioral Sciences

Pragmatic development explains the Theory-of-Mind Scale.
Henry Wellman and colleagues have provided evidence of a robust developmental progression in theory-of-mind (or as we will say, "mindreading") abilities, using verbal tasks. Understanding diverse desires is said to be easier than understanding diverse beliefs, which is easier than understanding that lack of perceptual access issues in ignorance, which is easier than understanding false belief, ...

Social and neurocognitive research suggests that thinking about one's own thinking and thinking about the thinking of others-termed 'mindreading', 'metacognition', 'social cognition' or 'mentalizing' are not identical activities. The ability though to think about thinking in the first person is nevertheless related to the ability to think about other's thoughts in the third person. Unclear is h...

متن کاملMindreading underlies Metacognition
This essay defends the view that human metacognition results from us turning our mindreading capacities upon ourselves, and that our access to our own propositional attitudes is through interpretation rather than introspection. Relevant evidence is considered, including that deriving from studies of childhood development and other animal species. Also discussed are data suggesting dissociations...

In a lifespan perspective, Baglio and Marchetti make the hypothesis of " the existence of multiple kinds of Theory of Mind " and urge the transition from a discrete to a dimensional approach in the study of mentalization (" ToM may vary along a quantitative and a qualitative continuum "). We resist such a plea and argue that we can stick to a discrete approach which posits just a single early-d...
